What makes R.E.P.O. so good with friends
R.E.P.O. is an online co-op horror game from semiwork for up to 6 players, in Early Access on Steam. Its store page sums up the job: locate valuable, fully physics-based objects and handle them with care as you extract them, from heavy pianos to fragile ceramics, using a physics-based grabbing tool, while proximity voice chat makes sure everyone hears you scream.
The monsters are only half of it. What makes a R.E.P.O. night is the rest, and that’s what we looked for:
- A simple job the group does together: carry it, film it, find it, get it up the mountain.
- Physics or chaos that nobody controls: objects, bodies or vehicles that don’t do what you planned.
- Voice chat moments: the plan, the panic, and the replay everyone talks about afterwards.
We split the list into co-op horror with a job to do and physics chaos without the monsters, because they suit different nights. Player counts come from each game’s Steam store page, checked in October 2026, and we only quote a number when the store page states one. Full disclosure: we make one of these games, and it isn’t a horror game.
Co-op horror with a job to do
Lethal Company
You’re contracted workers collecting scrap from abandoned, industrialized moons to meet the Company’s profit quota. Crewmates can guide each other from the ship with the radar and the terminal, or all go in together and try not to leave anyone behind. It’s in Early Access on Steam.
Why it’s here: It’s the game that made "co-op horror with a quota" a genre. If your group likes R.E.P.O.’s extraction runs, this is the obvious next one.
Content Warning
A co-op horror game in which you dive into the Old World to film physics-animated monsters, cursed relics and your friends being scared, then upload the footage to SpöökTube for views. Its store page lists 2–4 player online co-op.
Why it’s here: It turns the funniest R.E.P.O. moments, the ones you wish you had recorded, into the actual goal.
Phasmophobia
A 4-player online co-op psychological horror game. Your team of paranormal investigators uses ghost-hunting equipment to gather evidence in haunted locations and identify one of over 20 ghost types. It’s in Early Access on Steam.
Why it’s here: It’s the slower, scarier option: less slapstick than R.E.P.O., more "who’s going into the basement".
Physics chaos without the monsters
Not everyone in your group loves being scared. These keep the "physics ruined our plan" part and drop the horror:
Drive UP: Together
A co-op climbing game built on a proper driving simulation. Up to eight friends drive the same route up one mountain: planks barely wider than your axles, near-vertical ramps and the insides of giant pipes. Every meter is earned: one slip can cost you a lot of hard-won height.
Every car is a solid object, so the same controls let you be the bridge (park across a gap so a friend drives over you), the engine (push someone over a ledge no single car can clear) or the problem (tap a bumper one wheel from the summit).
Why it’s here: R.E.P.O. without the monsters, and with cars: up to eight friends drive the same narrow route up one mountain, and every car is solid, so the other players are the chaos. A helpful push, a "rescue" that sends someone off the edge, eight cars on one plank. If your group’s favourite part of R.E.P.O. is breaking things together, this is that on wheels. Skip it if you came for the horror.
Totally Reliable Delivery Service
A ragdoll physics simulation about terrible package delivery couriers. You work together with odd machinery, useful gadgets and the wonders of physics to reliably deliver packages, more or less.
Why it’s here: Carrying fragile things with unreliable bodies is basically the R.E.P.O. job, with zero scares.
Human: Fall Flat
A light-hearted physics platformer in floating dreamscapes, playable solo or with up to 8 players online. Need a hand getting a boulder onto a catapult? That’s what friends are for.
Why it’s here: It’s the gentlest physics co-op game around, and it fits a bigger group than R.E.P.O.
PEAK
A co-op climbing game in which a group of lost scouts must scale the mountain at the centre of an island to be rescued, with proximity chat and a mountain that changes every day.
Why it’s here: It shares R.E.P.O.’s proximity-chat comedy and adds a mountain. See our games like PEAK guide.

How to run a co-op chaos night
- Start with something light. A few runs of a non-horror game warm up the voice chat before the lights go out.
- Give people jobs. One person carries, one scouts, one keeps an eye on the exit (or on the person who always falls).
- Mix scary and silly. Alternate a horror game with a physics game, so the friend who hates jump scares still has a good night.
- Record everything. The best clips are the plans that went wrong. Streaming and monetized videos of Drive UP: Together are welcome; see our creator page.
- Match the game to the headcount. Four people fit almost everything here; for bigger groups see our 8-player co-op guide, and for four, our 4-player co-op guide.
